Portland: Voodo Doughnuts & Brewery Hopping

Updated: Jan 26, 2020

Over the long weekend for B.C. Day, my boyfriend and I decided to do a short road trip over the border all the way to Portland, Oregon.

It was my first time driving out to the states with someone other than one of my family members, and I’ll just say, I crushed that 5 hour drive there!

Portland is such a close drive from Vancouver, Canada how can you not go!? We stayed at The Hotel Zags which is pretty much a walking distance from central downtown district. About a 15 min walk to Target and all the brewery hopping needs.

Saturday morning we ventured off to one of Oregon's famous coasts, Cannon Beach! Honestly I've visited this coast line a few times, during spring and during summer, all different types of weather, yet the view has never ceased to amaze me. The drive from Portland is about a 1h30 drive, given there is no traffic.

After Cannon Beach we headed back to check out some of Portland's breweries. We listed out 6 places to visit, however with the lack of food in our stomach and all the lovely craft beers ready at any moment... we only made it to the first 3 of the 6 listed. All of these are within walking distance to each other so plug it into your map and make it a brewery hop!

1. Deschutes Brewery Portland Public House

2. Henry's 12th Street Tavern

3. Bailey's Taproom

4. Quality Bar

5. Beer O'Clock

6. The Big Legrowlski

We ordered a flight at Deschutes, because why not! This restaurant is quite popular so expect a wait. You can order from the bar and wait for your seats if you so please. We did that, and it felt like we got a table sooner than we thought. Score! I mean, what else are you gonna do while waiting for your table? Oh yeah if you’re a soft pretzel fan, you gotta try their pretzel and cheese + mustard appetizer. Nom nom nom 😋

Henry's 12th Street Tavern had a really cool vibe to it. It was a seat yourself kind of thing, and there was happy hour after 9pm. We got two IPA's, the one's with the highest alcohol content hahah and peaced it to make it to the next location.

Baileys Taproom! I loved the music here, and the open space. This was our last stop, we ordered another two IPAs (apparently ipa’s is our go to 😂) and then shared one Sour. At that point we really had no idea if we should venture off to another brewery/pub.

Actually before Bailey’s Taproom, we were going to head into Quality Bar but it looked like there was a cover fee. So if you’ve checked it out before let us know!

Alas, our next stop was the infamous Voodoo Doughnuts. Note to self, and for others, the donut's are huge okay!... unless you get the the classic ones, but even then those are relatively large. This was pretty much our late night attempt for "drunk food" hahaha

We both even agreed to only get a donut each.... we ended up with six LOL, so like any other young adult on a road trip would do, the donuts became our breakfast the following day 😂...In my mother's words, "No sayang!" (english: no waste!)

Sunday morning was our last day, so naturally we wanted to squeeze in another PNW tourist attraction. Behold, the beautiful Multnomah Falls, located in the Mt. Hood region. This attraction is only 30mins away from Portland making the decision to visit the falls an easy yes.

If you have the chance, I also highly recommend visiting Rowena Crest on Hwy 30. For all you instagrammers, photographers, videographers, vloggers, and/or tourists, go check it out! It's an iconic viewpoint shaped like a horseshoe surrounded by the landscapes of the Columbia River Gorge. See this pic below (I'm sure you've seen it before).

To wrap this post up, lets just say, if you're looking for a quick, nice, sweet and chill getaway, Portland, OR should definitely be up on your list. Common now, what cha waiting for?
